This 1810 recipe is quite labor intensive and took over five months to make. This recipe uses Brazilwood (expensive and hard to find a sustainable source), Alum, and Alcohol. The recipe talks about the finished product, saying that this “is a beautiful and inoffensive rouge…” which means that it’s a lovely color, not to bright and not too wild, a color that is proper for Ladies of the period.

It is very liquid and will stain whatever it touches, which is why we offer three types of bottle options.

This is a beautiful red color, which, depending on how many layers you apply, can become quite dark. This also can be used on your cheeks.
