We are really excited to have the opportunity to share this unique formula with you once again! We made a batch a few years ago and it was a huge hit- We love bringing exclusive limited-edition historical products to you!! Now is your chance to own an original recipe from the family recipe book of Martha Washington who had the book from 1749 to 1799 before passing it on keeping it in the family.

This recipe intrigued me. This was the first time I came across a recipe specifically for perfuming clothing in the folding after they are washed. Her instructions are as follows: “When you use this water……sprinkle your clothes therewith in the folding.” Can you use it for perfume? Sure. Can you use it to perfume your clothing? Of Course!!!

This unique recipe is ready to go. We put it into a lovely glass spray bottle similar to the long perfume bottles available at the time- so it is ready for you to use as you wish- body spray, a spray to freshen up clothing, ironing, or a room spray. It’s a very expensive recipe to reproduce which is why we are putting it in smaller bottles. This will allow you to have a piece of history without paying ginormous amounts to experience it.

What does it smell like?
It is very complex, and the scent is different for everyone. It does have Musk, Civet, and Labdanum ( a historical substitution for Ambergris) so Keep that in mind if you don’t like musk or civet scents. It reminds me of a little bit of a musky, animal-like sweet flowered, and even powdery patchouli. I love the smell it gives when applied to my skin. If you do use it on your skin, remember it will work with your own body’s chemistry- SO it will be unique to you. It is very sweet water and will smell different when in the bottle vs on your clothing and/or skin This comes with a lot of options. When it dries and/or heat is applied to it ( if you were ironing) it has a nice sweet smell. Give it a try and experience history.

I see this being kept in reenactment kits and trunks and used to freshen things up when needed. We do have many examples of clothing being scented. The herbs found in this recipe are no mistake. Clove and lavender help keep bugs away!!

Reproducing this recipe has allowed me to experience a unique scent that had been passed down for generations. Did Martha Washington’s family use it? We don’t have any evidence that she actually made this recipe, but because it was in her recipe book, it is a possibility. Her recipe says that you can use the dregs and re-scent it according to your preference with the previous ingredients. So in other words…. If you want to add more Rose Water the next time… it’s ok.

You need to give this a try and experience History.
