This kit is a great start for your Regency toilette. Women in the Regency period started to be more concerned with the skin, whereas in the 18th century, recipes for skin products were around and used, but by 1800- there was a push away from the “heavy” makeup of the 18th century for a more natural look of the Grecian beauties.
Notice the little squirrel: Squirrels were often used to symbolize playfulness, agility, and sometimes even vanity or covetousness and, some say, obedience & personal restraint. At other times, they were seen as an affectionate friend. They were kept as pets as early as the Middle Ages. Although the fad of having squirrels as pets started to die out by the second quarter of the 19th century, they were still popular at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. In portraiture, they also functioned as heraldic symbols and provided clues to the sitter’s identity. Enjoy this lovely Regency box as a peek into how women of that time cared for their skin and even applied makeup!
Random squirrel facts: Some 19th-century Chinese snuff bottles featured squirrels playing among vines with grapes because they were popular in 19th-century China and considered precious and highly fertile. Also, did you know that Benjamin Franklin wrote an elegy about the loss of his friend’s squirrel in 1772? As you look at portraits, you may start to see pet squirrels with their sitters.
