Brilliantine is a vintage hair-grooming product that softens hair and gives it a glossy shine. Those who know about it often think in terms of men’s products, but the truth is, women had various types of brilliantine available, too, in more feminine scents. In short, this is a finishing product for the hair that adds shine and control, ideal for creating sleek, polished styles. But like old school, you will need to shake it well before use!

Brilliantine is a vintage product that is designed to add shine, control frizz, and provide a smooth, sleek appearance to hair.

History:
It was created in 1873 by French perfumier Édouard Pinaud. It played a role in the broader evolution of pomades. He developed and presented it at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition, calling it “Brilliantine” (from the French “brillant” meaning shining). Brilliantine, a perfumed and colored oily liquid, became popular for softening and giving a lustrous appearance to men’s hair, beards, and mustaches. By 1928, cream-based alternatives were on the market, and it was soon realized that it wasn’t just men who wanted Brilliantine; women did, too. We see many formularies with general scents like Rose Geranium, Bergamot, Orange Flower, Roses, etc. However, by the early 1900s, we also saw more expensive high-quality Brilliantines showcase popular perfume and cologne scents as well. Fun fact: Brilliantines and hair oils came in different “tints.” The choices were Yellow, Red, or Green. The formularies usually allow you to choose which color you want to tint. We chose Yellow this time because our Rose hair oil is already red.

When you think of Brilliantine, you think of the old Hollywood movie actors and actresses with slicked-back and shiny hair! Brilliantine was instrumental in creating that iconic gentleman’s hairstyle. Think slick-back, combover, and pompadour, which were particularly popular during the 1920s and 1930s.

Scent: This is a fresh spring scent of budding lilacs and heliotrope, with fresh citrus undertones of bergamot. It’s a Perfect Vintage scent for Spring and Summer! It’s time to perfume your hair!!

Directions: How to use:
SHAKE FIRST! Apply to palms and work through dry hair to add shine. You can also apply it as the final step as you would finishing Pomade. Some stylists use a fair amount to give hair a sleek look, but less is more until you get the hang of it!
