Mastering the Art of Styling a Coat for a Classic Look: Two Unique Approaches

For those residing in chillier regions, a coat is far from a luxury – it’s an absolute essential. We might fantasize about living in a place where we can step outside in December unburdened by layers that make us look like the Michelin man, but that doesn’t mean our winter coat should be dismissed as an insignificant detail. On the contrary, it presents an opportunity to truly stand out. Here are two classic methods to style a coat!

Residing in the Midwest, where the cold can creep in as early as October, I’ve come to realize that a coat is a vital component of one’s attire. As I’ve mentioned before, the right coat can significantly influence your overall style. Sometimes, it might be the only reflection of your fashion sense!

A person’s coat can speak volumes about their style. While I’m not advocating for dressing solely to impress others, it’s undeniable that a coat makes a distinct statement. What kind of message would you like your coat to convey about you?

There’s a vast assortment of coats available, from pea coats and maxi coats to leather, puffer, faux fur, and even wool coats. I firmly believe that most (if not all) of these varieties deserve a spot in your closet.

Here is a simple and handy guide on how to style a coat in two classic ways, using my cherished camel coat as an example.

Here’s a quick and easy idea on how to wear a coat in 2 different classic ways, using my ever-so-favorite camel coat.

  • Open

  • Belted

Indeed, a camel coat can effortlessly elevate a casual outfit. It’s a simple way to add a touch of classic elegance, making even your leggings and favorite sneakers look fashionable!

Pairing a camel coat with a white shirt or a snug sweater is another chic option. For more outfit ideas featuring a camel coat, check out this post.

If possible, opt for a neutral color (black, navy, gray) for your coat, with the exception of your faux fur coat. This can be your fun statement piece – feel free to choose one in an adventurous pattern (like animal print) or from a vibrant color palette.

Which coat styles should you avoid belting?

Steer clear of belting bomber jackets and leather jackets.

The coat shown in the picture is belted as a demonstration, but if you observe the other images closely, there’s a backstrap on this coat. I would recommend avoiding belting a coat with a back strap as it might look a bit odd from the back. Trying a strapless and buttonless coat is a hassle-free way to experiment with belting your coat without worrying about how it looks!
